Adversity is a theme that BGSU Volleyball has had to get used to dealing with since Petra Indrova went down with a season-ending injury in the preseason.
At the same time, one could argue that the team, on the floor, is going to be just fine still with all the talent head coach Danijela Tomic has brought in over the past 10 months.
Well, that argument looked really good today.
Kat Mandly led the way with 11 kills and freshman Amanda Otten creeped into triple-double territory, as Bowling Green defeated the East Tennessee State Buccaneers in straight sets earlier Friday afternoon in the Northern Kentucky Volleyball Invitational, to kick off the 2023 campaign.
The Falcons defeated the Buccaneers 25-16, 25-10, and 26-24.
Defense played a huge role in the outcome, as the orange and brown held the Bucs to a .000 hitting percentage, including negatives in the first two sets.
On the offensive end, Otten showed serious promise for the Falcons, ending the match with 18 assists, six kills, seven digs, and two aces.
The freshman from Batavia, Ill. did all of that, and yet, it was only her first match as a college player.
Other notable stats include Mia Tyler (Kills: 7), Alexis Mettille/Jessica Andrews (Blocks: 3), Jaden Walz/Otten/Mettille (Aces: 2), and Otten/Lindsey LaPinta/Alex Laboy (Digs: 7).
BGSU looks to get to 2-0 Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m., when the Falcons take on the #14 Ohio State Buckeyes.
Steve Iwanek has the call on 88.1 FM WBGU from Regents Hall beginning at 1:45 p.m.
