The 2023 Mid-American Conference volleyball season has been one that quite simply?
Nuts.
Let’s break down what happened this past week, as well as what to expect coming up.
- Another week, another award for WMU’s Case: Western Michigan’s Logan Case is certainly continuing to build her case for why she is arguably the best setter in the entire country. Last week, the senior collected the MAC West Setter of the Week award, the sixth time in seven weeks that she has been named that. Case racked up 92 assists (11.50/set) to help fuel a Western Michigan offense which hit a combined .287 in road wins at Kent State and Ohio last week. The senior also racked up 24 digs (3.00/set), coming just short of recording a pair of double-doubles. In Thursday’s sweep at Kent State, Case handed out 43 assists to help the Broncos hit a season-high .421 and added nine digs. She then racked up 49 assists and 15 digs in WMU’s come-from-behind win at Ohio on Friday night.
- Buffalo snags a couple more awards: The MAC East Offensive Player and Setter of the Week awards once again belonged to a pair of Buffalo Bulls this week, with Katrin Trebichavska and Mandy Leigh earning the respective awards. For Trebichavska, this is the second career honor of this regard, and she truly earned it. She helped the Bulls improve to a program-best start to MAC play at 5-1. She averaged 4.88 kills per set, finishing with a team-leading 39 kills. Meanwhile for Leigh, her award is the fourth one of this season, and her tenth overall. She helped the Bulls improve to a program-best start to MAC play at 5-1. She averaged 11.38 assists per set, finishing with a total of 91. On Thursday night against the Chippewas, she racked up her team-leading 10th double-double of the season with 57 assists and 13 digs.
- Ball State wins seventh straight match: The non-conference slate for Ball State certainly has paid off in building some character, because nobody can slow them down right now. With wins over Miami and Bowling Green last week, the Cardinals are now tied for first with Western Michigan at 6-0 in conference play. With the division winners determined via best conference record, the battle down the home stretch between the Broncos and Cardinals will certainly be a fascinating one to watch. The two teams face each other Friday, Nov. 3, in Kalamazoo.
