Tomorrow marks one month exactly until the 2023 Mid-American Conference Tournament, and as the race tightens, some hope is being shown for teams that we once thought were out of the fight.
A look at some of this week’s top storylines.
- WMU’s Case making case for greatest setter in MAC history- If you ever have watched MAC Volleyball, you probably have heard of the name Logan Case. Well Case is continuing to add her historic career, as on Tuesday in Western Michigan’s win over Northern Illinois, Case became the all-time leader in assists in program history (4,538), passing Mary Murphy (2015-18). Case not only is the all-time leader for WMU, but, as long as her pace of 11.65 assists/set keeps pace, Case has a chance to crack the top five all-time in the MAC.
- Akron faces tough stretch amid losing streak- I know that Bowling Green fans will love to see it, but right now, the Akron Zips are struggling. Losers of three straight, Akron is now 10-10 overall and 5-4 in MAC play, just two games ahead of BG. While the distance remains, the upcoming schedule for Akron includes a home series against Toledo, followed by a road trip for a match against Northern Illinois and red-hot Western Michigan. Certainly the matches are winnable, but at least on paper, the Zips have a stretch that they will have to work through with toughness and resilience in order to fend off an up-and-coming BGSU team.
- Weekly MAC awards spread across the conference- In what has been an alternative to the usual one or two team dominance of weekly awards, this week saw six different schools have a representative in the MAC Division Players of the Week awards list. In the East, Bowling Green’s Lauryn Hovey took home Offensive Player of the Week, Kent State’s Bryn Roberts won Defensive Player of the Week, and Buffalo’s Mandy Leigh won setter of the week. In the West, Ball State’s Aniya Kennedy won Offensive Player of the Week, Northern Illinois’ Charli Atiemo took home Defensive Player of the Week, and once again, WMU’s Case? Setter of the Week.
