BGSU Men’s Soccer sophomore midfielder Andrew Shaffer has been called up to represent the U.S. Virgin Islands National Team for their match against Aruba on November 16th, in the CONCACAF Nations League.
“It’s a huge honor to represent the Virgin Islands, being able to play in the Concacaf Nations League is a unique opportunity and an experience I will not forget,” said Shaffer.
Along with Shaffer, his two brothers, Alex and William Shaffer, who both play at Ohio Northern University, have also received call-ups to play for the U.S. Virgin Islands.
“My brothers getting called up as well makes this an even cooler experience,” Shaffer said. “We grew up playing together in the yard, and being able to share the stage with them in a competition like the Nations League is pretty neat.”
Receiving this opportunity for Shaffer to play in front of family and represent his homeland is a great achievement.
“I’m very excited to be playing a home game on St. Croix so some of my extended family can make it. My uncle, who lives on St. Croix will be there,” said Shaffer.
Shaffer hopes this can be the first of many games with the national team.
“There are a lot of exciting games in the future for the Virgin Islands like World Cup qualifiers next summer,” said Shaffer. “I’m hoping to perform well this camp and continue playing with the Virgin Islands in the future.”
Shaffer finished the 2023 season playing all 18 games for the Falcons, making 16 starts. He has scored three goals, including a brace against Cleveland State on opening night, and recorded two assists for the Orange and Brown.
In his two seasons as a Falcon, Shaffer has appeared in 29 matches for BG, tallying six goals and four assists.
