After leading the National Junior College Athletic Association in points scored last season at Southern Union State Community College, junior guard Marcus Hill moved to the Division I level, joining Todd Simon at Bowling Green.
After 23 games wearing the Orange and Brown, Hill looks like a steal for Simon and the Falcons.
In BG’s most recent contest, an 87-73 victory over Buffalo on Tuesday night, Hill led the Falcons with 27 points, shooting 11-16 from the field and 5-6 on free throws.
After making a buzzer-beating layup to end the first half and extend BGSU’s lead by eight points, Hill took over the second half.
The Rockford, Illinois, native scored 18 of his 27 points in the final 20 minutes of the contest, including a stretch where he scored eight straight points for the Orange and Brown.
The performance against the Bulls marked Hill’s eighth straight 20-point performance, the longest active streak in the nation. He is also tied with North Carolina’s RJ Davis and Northern Colorado’s Saint Thomas for the longest 20-point performance streak in the country this season.
“You see all the scoring because it’s almost effortless for him, but he’s special at those other things. I think he’s probably close to six rebounds a game [during conference play] for a guard, which is fantastic. Four assists again tonight, seven the other day; he’s making the right plays, and as our jumpers start falling, I think you’re going to see those numbers increase,” Simon said postgame after the win against Buffalo. “With him being a true point guard wanting to make plays and us having two true point guards on the floor that combined 10 assists tonight, that puts so much pressure on a defense.”
Hill leads the Mid-American Conference (MAC) and ranks ninth in the country with 21.5 points per game.
During MAC play, Hill and senior forward Rashaun Agee have stepped up for the Falcons. Hill leads the MAC with 23.9 points per game in 11 contests against conference opponents.
“We have high expectations for them, and we rely on them. They’ve stepped up and shouldered that role,” Simon said. “They’re some of the best players in the league, and that’s what great players do. I tell them, ‘Is it fair that we need to ask more from you? There’s only one fair, it’s selling tickets and rides, you have to do it. If we’re going to win, you have to step up and give us even more than you have been giving us.’ They’ve embraced it and handled it with maturity.”
While Hill has started to receive national recognition and has already received two MAC Player of the Week awards this season, he does not believe he deserves all the credit.
“It feels good, but I give all accomplishments to my team because, without them, I couldn’t do anything,” he said.
After securing their most home wins and best start to a season since the 2019-2020 campaign, Hill and the Orange and Brown will start a three-game road trip with the second round of the MAC-Sun Belt Conference Challenge against Louisiana on Sunday, Feb. 11. Tip-off against the Ragin’ Cajuns is set for 3 p.m.
