Bowling Green baseball has their next series this week, this time facing the Dayton Flyers on Wednesday, March 13 in a home and home series. The Orange and Brown are currently hot, sweeping Miami (OH) on Sunday.
This is the first of a two-game series matchup against the Flyers, with the second game slated for April 23 at 3 p.m. at Steller Field. First pitch on Wednesday is at 3 p.m. at Woerner Field inside AES Ohio Stadium in Dayton.
Coming off of their first series sweep of the season, Bowling Green looks to extend their win streak to four games for the first time in nearly a year, with the last time coming against Akron in April last year.
Matchup History
The Falcons hold the overall advantage on Dayton with a record of 46-23, winning six of their previous ten games. The latest matchup occurred on May 1, 2019, falling in the favor of the Flyers 6-3.
Homefield advantage has been a struggle for BGSU, who have lost three straight games at Dayton dating back to April 16, 2016.
Scouting Bowling Green
BGSU is 5-7 so far this season after ripping off a three-win series sweep against the Miami RedHawks last weekend, snapping a previous five game losing skid.
BG at the plate is thriving early this season, with the team putting up 99 runs, second in the Mid-American Conference (MAC), averaging 8.3 runs a game.
The Orange and Brown earned two separate MAC awards with senior infielder Tyler Ross being named MAC Player of the Week after he went a perfect five-for-five at the plate, racking up six RBIs in a tight win against Miami on Friday.
Junior pitcher Nic Good helped ease pitching woes for BGSU, becoming the second Falcon pitcher this year to win MAC Pitcher of the Week, allowing just one hit against Miami on Saturday.
Pitching has been a weak spot for BGSU, who have let up 10+ runs in eight different games, putting them at a season earned run average (ERA) of 8.49, which is fourth worst in the MAC.
Scouting Dayton
Dayton is 9-6 so far this year and is coming off of a three-game winning streak similar to BGSU. The Flyers are 1-0 against teams from the MAC, beating Toledo 6-2 on March 6.
Strength of schedule also favors Dayton, who beat nationally ranked Vanderbilt on February 20 and played #1 Wake Forest in a series.
The Flyers are towards the top of the pack in the Athletic 10 (A10) conference, with the fifth best ERA (6.65) and fifth best batting average (.270) in the conference.
Hot bats are a common factor for two Flyers in particular, freshman infielder David Mendez and senior infielder Carlos Castillo, with the both of them ranked third and fourth respectively in batting average.
Falcon Four Players to Watch
Nathan Archer (Bowling Green #8)
The junior outfielder has a perfect fielding percentage and is just one triple away from hitting his ninth triple as a Falcon, which would put him in the top 10 in BGSU history for triples.
The LaGrange, Ohio native has a .269 batting average along with a .500 slugging percentage and a .377 on base percentage.
Archer has tallied 14 RBI’s, four doubles, a triple and two homeruns while starting every game of the season for BGSU.
The sophomore pitcher provides a spark whenever he is on the mound for the Falcons, while also being able to bat, field, and pitch any given day.
An Archbold native has pitched 19 total innings this season resulting in 26 strikeouts, with the Falcons being outscored 40-35 when he is in.
At home plate, Newman has a .348 batting average, which is the best on the team. He also recorded a .630 slugging percentage and a .483 on base percentage.
The redshirt junior pitcher is coming off of a difficult loss to South Dakota State after striking out eight batters and allowing four runs in seven innings.
The right-hander from Boston, Massachusetts is not an offense producer, however he works in the clutch as a pure pitcher and fielder.
Peguero has an ERA sitting at 6.75, but with the most innings pitched on the team (18.2), he can be a crucial closer in tight situations.
The freshman infielder has already recorded an A-10 Freshman of the Week award after making his debut against Vanderbilt.
The Aldie, Virginia native leads the team in batting average (.424), slugging percentage (.636), and on base percentage (.558).
On the season, he has recorded 11 RBI’s, two doubles, a triple and a homerun, making himself a valuable asset for Dayton.
