BG drops two back-and-forth games to Akron, fall to 4-22

Bowling Green, OH – Falcons freshman pitcher Emma Dennison (16) pitching to a Zips batter with her infield at the ready at Meserve Field in Bowling Green, Ohio

Not able to finish two tight games, Bowling Green softball has fallen to 4-22 this season. Their most recent losing bout was a doubleheader against Akron, falling 4-2 and 7-5 yesterday at Meserve Field..

In game one, Akron struck first on a double play ball to shortstop from Sophia Wygast, trading two outs for one run. The next score happened in the third, the orange and brown scoring one on an Aaralyn Nogay triple to right, and the other on a sacrifice fly from Peyton Dolejs to center.

The two-run lead didn’t last long, as in the fourth inning, starting pitcher Macy Walters singled, knocking in a run to tie the game. Delaney Jenkinson hit a fly ball to center in the sixth, scoring Wygast from third for the game-winning run.

Wygast had the best offensive game of any player for either team, playing first base and going 2-3 at the plate with the game-winning run. Zips pitcher Walters pitched all seven innings with no earned runs, four strikeouts, and three walks.

The second game of the day was more of the same outcome, just a higher-scoring affair.

The Zips started strong with a Wygast home run to left field scoring two runs on one swing. Yet, BG answered with their two-run effort in the bottom of the first on a passed ball and a stolen base, scoring Nogay and Dolejs in two pitches.

Akron tied it on a catching error from Ashley Chevalier, scoring Tiffany Stevens from first on one play. Like the first inning, the Falcons tied it with a Chevalier single up the middle, scoring one and evening out her error.

Both teams scored in the fourth and fifth innings. In a 5-5 game in the top of the sixth, Autumn Bailey tripled, scoring Meagan Lee for the game-winning run. Wygast singled, scoring Bailey on the next at-bat.

Despite the loss, Dolejs had the best performance of anyone in the second game. She went 4-4 at the plate with a run scored. She was tightly followed by Wygast who went 2-4 with a home run, run, and two RBIs.

Falcon softball plays Akron on Sunday at noon at Meserve Field in Bowling Green. After Akron, they head to Muncie, Indiana for a doubleheader against Ball State on April 12.
