Bowling Green baseball (26-15, 19-3 MAC) faced their toughest challenge of the year as they took on the Western Michigan Broncos (23-19, 13-9 MAC), who find themselves second in the Mid-American Conference (MAC) behind the Falcons.
A double by senior infielder Josh Swinehart stunned the Falcons early, sending two Broncos across home plate for the first-inning advantage.
BG’s offense was put to the test, as it was held scoreless for the first time since they lost 6-4 to Ohio State on April 9th. This was until a spark by junior centerfielder Nathan Archer came in the form of a triple, pushing two base runners across and knotting everything up.
Quick shots in fair territory from sophomore infielder Sam Seidel and senior infielder Landon Roque gave the Falcons the lead for the first time all day in the sixth. This provided enough momentum for junior designated hitter Gavin Ganun to smoke a home run ball that would bring home three more runs for the Falcons, leading to six runs scored in the sixth.
Pitching for Bowling Green tightened up after the first inning as junior pitcher Nic Good allowed only one run after the Swinehart play, tossing six total innings with four strikeouts and two walks. Good is coming off a Saturday start against Kent State on April 27, where he and the bullpen pitched a scoreless game (10-0) for the first time all year.
BGSU head coach Kyle Hallock had nothing but praise for the Grosse Pointe, Michigan, native who lost a day of rest in the shift.
“Nic’s a professional, he’s mature. He told me what he wanted to do, and we came in there the rest of the game and gave up one more run to that offense. You listen to your players when they’re dudes like Nic Good.”
BGSU will attempt to take the series against Western Michigan on Saturday or Sunday, with the first pitch at 1 p.m. on both days. The Falcons hold a six-game advantage over the Broncos for seeding in the MAC tournament.
