A lecture entitled “Photography and Geology in the Rocky Mountain Region” will be given by professors Andrew Hershberger and Kurt Panter at The Rotary Nature Center on Oct. 30 at 7 p.m.
Hershberger and Panter are working with Natural Resource Specialist Cinda Stutzman and BG Parks and Recreation to put on this event. The lecture is open to everyone, but Hershberger and Panter said those interested in landscape photography and geology may be more inclined to attend.
“Kurt and I will be sharing our interdisciplinary research into the connected histories of both photography and geology in the American West, “ Hershberger said.
Hershberger will also share landscape photographs that were created for and published in the book “Sun Pictures of Rocky Mountain Scenery.” The text for this book was written by American geologist Ferdinand Vandeveer Hayden, so Panter, in coalition with Hershberger, will discuss his geological interpretation of some of the photographs from the book.
The Rotary Nature Center is located at 615 S. Wintergarden Road, and here, attendees will have the opportunity to explore the 120 acre nature preserve before or after the lecture. Hershberger and Panter expect the lecture will take around an hour with time for audience questions at the end.
“This particular lecture will be the seventh time that Kurt and I have given lectures here in BG on the connections between photography and geology. Each time we’ve enjoyed presenting together, and there definitely seems to be an interested audience here in BG for these talks,” Hershberger said.
Anyone interested in attending this educational and community-oriented event can contact Cinda Stutzman at 419-353-0301 to reserve a spot.
