As the November 2024 election approaches, Terry Burton, the director of the Wood County Board of Elections, said the county emphasizes a commitment to voter privacy and security throughout the voting process.
“We take numerous steps to ensure that every vote is cast securely and counted accurately,” said Burton.
Burton said there are strict protocols in place for both absentee and early voting.
“When someone requests an absentee ballot, we verify their registration by checking multiple identifiers including their name, address, birthdate, and ID information. We also match their signature to the original voter record to confirm their identity,” Burton added.
For early voting, a similar process is followed. Voters are required to provide a photo ID and confirm their registered address. This information is checked by bipartisan staff before a ballot is issued.
Election Day follows the same secure process, ensuring only eligible voters cast ballots.
“Every step is double-checked by bipartisan workers,” Burton said. “It’s a multi-step process designed to protect voter integrity.”
Burton also stressed the importance of the bipartisan system that governs the Board of Elections.
“Our staff is equally divided between Republicans and Democrats. Any handling of ballots is done with representatives from both parties to ensure fairness,” Burton said.
Burton said all ballots are securely stored once received, with limited access granted only to bipartisan teams.
“There are multiple checks and balances in place to protect your vote. We are committed to ensuring that your vote is counted and your privacy is respected,” Burton said.
