With the rising cost of living, the City of Bowling Green is taking measures to help residents manage monthly household expenses, including utilities, healthcare, and housing. Through various programs and partnerships, Bowling Green is working to ease the financial burden for households and ensure that essential services remain accessible to all community members.
“The City of Bowling Green helps residents manage housing and utility costs through several programs,” said Matthew Snow, Community Development Administrator. “For example, our Direct Homeownership Assistance program reduces mortgage principal amounts and covers closing costs for low- to moderate-income households.”
The City offers several programs, including the Rental Rehabilitation Program, which provides zero-interest loans to landlords for property improvements on the condition that they rent to low to moderate income tenants.
“Programs like these are tailored to support specific needs and improve the quality of life for our residents,” Snow said.
In addition to city-run programs, Bowling Green collaborates with outside organizations to further lighten household expenses. The Efficiency Smart Program, available to local electric customers, provides energy-saving information and incentives, helping residents reduce their electric bills through improved energy efficiency.
For broader utility assistance, the Great Lakes Community Action Partnership (GLCAP) offers aid through the Percentage of Income Payment Plan (PIPP) Plus, which allows eligible residents to make affordable monthly utility payments based on income, while the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) provides an annual credit toward utility bills. Both programs are vital for residents who are facing financial challenges.
City representatives said the city actively seeks community input on rising costs through annual planning sessions and surveys. Snow emphasized to residents in need of further assistance to look to community partners when those resources are unavailable.
“Our community has a robust network of resources to assist residents,” Snow said.
