BGSU hockey (10-7-2) spent the past weekend in Michigan’s upper peninsula as they took on Lake Superior State University (8-11-1). The series resulted in the Falcons claiming both games in dominant fashion while outscoring the Lakers 6-1 throughout the weekend.
Christian Stoever was the player of the weekend as he recorded a .974 save percentage in a 37-save performance to match his 34-save shutout from the night before. Stoever ended the weekend with a cumulative save percentage of .986 while making 71 saves between the two games.
Bowling Green started the scoring halfway through the first period when a shot from senior defenseman Ben Wozney was tipped in by junior forward Brett Pfoh. Graduate student forward Ethan Scardina was also credited with an assist on the goal.
BG added to their lead later in the period thanks to a power play goal from sophomore forward Ben Doran. Wozney, along with junior defenseman Eric Parker, both assisted on the play that ended with Doran ripping a shot from the left faceoff dot that easily found the back of the net.
LSSU responded with a power-play goal of their own during the second period. Junior forward Sasha Teleguine tipped in a shot from sophomore forward Luke Levandowski, with an additional assist being given to fellow sophomore forward John Herrington.
The Falcons were able to put the game on ice thanks to a goal from Scardina. The graduate student received a perfectly placed pass in the slot from junior forward Quinn Emerson. Eric Parker was credited with the secondary assist on the play.
The weekend’s performance marks the fourth-weekend sweep (Mercyhurst, Ferris State, Northern Michigan, Lake Superior State) for the Falcons so far this season.
This weekend’s sweep also has serious implications for the Falcon’s playoff hopes. Before this weekend, Lake Superior held fourth place in the CCHA standing, with Bowling Green sitting just below them at the fifth spot. This weekend’s sweep allowed BG to leapfrog over the Lakers and tie Michigan Tech for third in the standings.
Both wins will no doubt serve as a confidence-aiding weekend, with BG handling both games over a team that may end up being a playoff matchup for the Falcons.
The Falcons will play Laker Superior again to conclude their regular season on Feb. 28 and March 1 at the Slater Family Ice Arena.
Next weekend, BGSU will return home to the Slater Family Ice Arena for a weekend series against the Bemidji State Beavers. Falcon Media Sports Network’s Ben Corak and Sean Connelly will have the call for both games starting at 6:45 on WBGU 88.1 FM.
