Akron, Ohio- On a cloudy Saturday morning, BGSU baseball (12-5, 5-0 MAC) played their second game of the series against the Akron Zips (6-12, 0-5 MAC), winning with a score of 11-5, with Bowling Green’s Nic Good claiming victory over Jack Fenton.
Good’s day would be easy as the Zips stranded many runners, but Good ultimately got through these innings, ending the day with four innings pitched, one earned run, eight strikeouts, four hits, and four walks, making the Falcons 12-5 on the year.
BGSU would ultimately rely on its bullpen to get the job done, struggling as the Zips’ Evan Bottone homered in the sixth, making the score 10-3. Shortly after, in the seventh, Akron got a single to left field, bringing the score to 10-4. Finally, a fielder’s choice error led to another run, making it 10-5 as, late in the game, Akron threatened many times against the Falcons.
Bowling Green batters Cooper McKenzie, Brady Birchmeier, and DJ Newman, went yards, helping the Falcons secure the victory.
McKenzie would start the hitting parade in the first inning with a homer to right field, bringing in three RBIs and giving his team a 4-0 lead, which shook up Akron’s starting pitcher.
Once the third inning arrived, with one on base, Birchmeier homered, bringing in two RBIs and making the score 6-0. This would be the end of the day for Fenton, as Dawson Tourney would replace him.
Tourney, still in the third inning, would get the first two batters out but then got into trouble by allowing a double to BGSU’s TJ Takats. This was followed by Garrett Sloan bringing him home with a single up the middle, making it 7-0.
Leading into the fourth inning, Newman had a runner on base when he hit a homer off the UA pitcher to right field, making the score 9-0 and effectively ending Tourney’s day.
The Bowling Green offense managed only two more runs: one in the sixth inning of the game, thanks to an RBI double by Birchmeier, and another in the seventh when BGSU had the bases loaded, with Takats walking to bring in Garrett Wright.
Bowling Green will look for the sweep against the Akron Zips on Sunday, March 16, at 1 pm.
