On Tuesday, junior two-way player, DJ Newman found himself in the national spotlight being named a John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Week following a 7-12 performance above home plate, paired with three hits, two runs and two strikeouts through four innings on the mound.
The College Baseball Foundation presents the award to the best two-way player in the nation each week. It is named after 2007 College Baseball Hall of Fame inductee John Olerud.
In last weekend’s series against the Akron Zips, Newman returned to the batting order after missing three straight games. During his return, the junior put up seven hits in his twelve at-bats. Through three games, he also had four RBIs and two home runs from his seven contact moments.
Through fifteen games the Archibold, Ohio, native is fourth in the Mid-American Conference (MAC) in batting average at .434.
From the mound, Newman started the series opener by letting up a single, double and home run with two walks, to help set BGSU up for their 7-3 victory over the Akron Zips on Friday.
This nomination is the third time in 2025 that the two-way player has been nationally recognized, with the other two being a Preseason First Team All-American by D1 Baseball and a Preseason Second Team-All American nod from Perfect Game USA.
So far this season Newman joins, three other players as Olerud weekly award winners following behind Rice freshman left-handed pitcher and outfielder Blaine Brown, San Diego senior left-hander and outfielder Austin Smith and Michigan senior right-handed pitcher and designated hitter Will Rodgers.
