Over the weekend, the Bowling Green State University Falcons Softball Team (17-9, 5-3 MAC) took on the Toledo Rockets (8-20, 1-6 MAC). The teams played a game on Friday, and followed with a doubleheader on Saturday. The Falcons won all three games against their rivals in convincing fashion.
In the first game, the Falcons took advantage of some wild pitching from Rockets starter Sophia Knight. Her eight walks on the day would help Bowling Green scored some easy runs early on. They had a four-run lead after three innings, but only had two hits during that time.
Wynnie Reid, Greta L’Esperance, and Sophie Weber all had a pair of hits in the game. Bailey Sample scored twice in the game, as did L’Esperance. Both of them managed to get themselves into scoring position on their own, as Sample had two stolen bags, and L’Esperance had one. Reid also had a steal. Payton Gottshall pitched a brilliant game, with a complete game and only two hits allowed. She struck out 15 Rockets on her way to the 7-1 win.
On Saturday, Gottshall managed to out-perform herself from Friday, as she twirled a one-hit complete game shutout in the first game, and followed that up by picking up a win in 2 2/3 innings of two-hit shutout pitching. Gottshall had all three pitcher wins on the weekend with a clinic in the circle for the Falcons.
L’Esperance had two more hits in the first game of the doubleheader, this time including an inside-the-park home run. Peyton Dolejs was 2-2 with a walk in the game as well. Both Falcons would score twice. The final score would end up being 6-0.
In the second game, despite going down 3-0 to the Rockets, the Falcons came from behind and scored five unanswered runs to secure their victory and the sweep of Toledo. Sample and Ally Bezjak had each had two hits in the nightcap, with Sample driving in a pair while down by three. The Falcons would win that game 5-3.
Bowling Green will host the Buffalo Bulls (13-10, 5-2 MAC) in a three-game series in Bowling Green, OH. They start with a doubleheader on Saturday, and finish with one on Sunday.
