BGSU softball went to Rosemont, Illinois to open their 2022 campaign in the DePaul Dome Tournament. The Falcons had a good start to the season, as they left Rosemont with a 4-1 record. This included wins over Western Illinois, Eastern Illinois and two wins over Butler. The Falcons’ one loss came in just a 6 inning game against Seattle.
Over the weekend Payton Gotshall was absolutely dominant as she rolled along to a 3-0 record. Gotshall pitched the season opener where she would go on to strike out 14 and only allow two hits in a complete game shutout against the Western Illinois Bulldogs. She then went on to only pitch five innings against Eastern Illinois, striking out 10 and only allowing two runs. In her final performance against Butler, she pitched another complete game shutout, striking out nine and this time only allowing one single hit. In those three games, she pitched two complete game shutouts and just allowed two runs in a total of 19 innings. Not only was she getting outs in a hurry, she struck out a combined 33 hitters in three incredible performances.
The Falcons had a .262 team batting average over the weekend. Bailey Sample, Peyton Dolejs and Regan Williamson were some key performers over the weekend. Bailey Sample hit a whopping .462 this weekend getting six hits in 13 at-bats with a total of three doubles. She also drove in five RBI in the tournament. Peyton Dolejs also has quite the weekend herself hitting .429. Dolejs totaled six hits in 14 at-bats including two doubles, driving in five RBI and scoring six times. Regan Williamson’s power was also on display this weekend as she hit a three-run homerun against Butler. She also drove in a team leading eight RBI and had two, three RBI games over the weekend.
The Falcons look to the North Carolina Invitational next, on Feb. 25. They will begin play with a Friday double-header at 10 p.m. against Delaware, then at 12:30 p.m. against North Carolina State.
