It is now the halfway point in the fall rugby season and the Falcon rugby club is more than happy with their standing going into Saturday’s game against Central Michigan.
BG continues to show opponents that they are chasing the league title. Thus far, no team has been able to keep up with the Falcons on the field.
The team has the best offense in the league, scoring 54.4 points per game. They also have the best defense, only allowing 12 points per game.
BG is sporting a 3-0 record, as they head on the road to take on a 2-1 Central Michigan club. The Chippewas are currently tied in second place in the conference with Ohio.
Central Michigan’s loss came against the Bobcats last weekend, so they will need some help from other teams to hold that second place spot in the standings.
This is a must-win game for the Chippewas, but a team coming to town with the best offense and the best defense is not going to help their cause.
Falcons’ Corey Ruth will be held out of the game on Saturday due to a leg injury that he suffered against Ball State last weekend.
“My leg is still pretty messed up,” Ruth said. “It is still quite painful to stand up and do any type of quick movement.”
BG has a new offensive system this year that requires a lot of quick movement. In the past, they were a team that would run over their opponents.
Now, they like to spread the field to create bigger holes in the defense. Some might say they aren’t as physical as they used to be, but they are still as effective and efficient.
“We played Central last year and played pretty well,” Ruth said. “I think if we continue to play how we are, playing smart, hitting holes, rather than the more physical type of play we used to have, we will continue to win.”
It’s good news for the Chippewas that Ruth will be out. The bad news for BG is that they are on the road for three of their final four games of the regular season, so Central Michigan will look to take advantage of their home game this weekend, which adds more intrigue going into the weekend.
The match will take place Saturday at 1 p.m. at Central Michigan.
