  • They Both Die at the End – General Review
Summer break is the perfect opportunity to get back into reading. Adam Silvera’s (2017) novel, They Both Die at the End, can serve as a stepping stone into the realm of reading. The pace is fast, action-packed, and develops loveable characters. Also, Silvera switches point of view each chapter where narration mainly focuses on the protagonists, […]
  • My Favorite Book – Freshwater
If there’s one book that I believe everyone should read once in their life, it’s my favorite book – Freshwater by Akwaeke Emezi. From my course, Queer Literature under Dr. Bill Albertini, I discovered Emezi’s Freshwater (2018). Once more, my course, Creative Writing Thesis Workshop under Professor Amorak Huey, was instructed to present our favorite […]

West calls BG to downtown cafe

The Grand Canyon, Billy the Kid and gorgeous terrains of unlimited space as far as the eye can see. It’s a shame the West is so far away, but Bowling Green has captured a piece of the desert pie.

So saddle up and get your palates ready, it’s time to enter the Call of the Canyon Cafe.

Originally named for the Zane Grey novel, “The Call of the Canyon,” the cafe of the same name, located at 109 N. Main St., has been pleasing customers with its fresh flavor and its unique Southwestern flair under owner Sarah Foster.

“Depending on how busy we are, we bake our own sourdough bread either every or every other day, so it’s fresh,” Foster said.

On top of making fresh bread in the cafe, there are also many items that people get on a regular basis such as: burritos, homemade desserts, the newly added vegetarian menu and sandwiches which are named after Southwestern landmarks.

“There are so many things that people love to get, truly there are people that will always get the same thing because they love it so much,” Foster said.

Some of the dishes that people love so much are the Calamity Sarah Jane Salad, the Sante Fe and the Little Daisy sandwich. The food has a touch of the southwest with jalapenos, guacamole, hot pepper cheese, pinto beans, cornbread and even a special dressing.

“I make most of the desserts myself, and they are really popular,” Foster said. “I do a lot of fruit pies, but cheesecakes are my specialty.”

Even though the food is a big draw in the cafe, the inside of the cafe makes for a very easygoing atmosphere.

“The atmosphere is real casual,” Foster said. “We have a lot of interesting Southwestern memorabilia. The decor makes it a very fun and comfortable atmosphere.”

Most of the pieces of memorabilia on the walls were collected by Foster and were also donated by loyal customers of the cafe. Pictures of the Grand Canyon and other landmarks line the walls along with knick-knacks to enhance the atmosphere.

“Just recently a really good customer brought in a photograph that she had taken of the Grand Canyon in winter,” Foster said.

“You don’t see that very often and that was pretty beautiful. I also always get people that want to buy items off of the walls because they are attracted to them.”

If the life-like atmosphere of the cafe alone doesn’t draw you in, then the “Gourmet Cowboy Cuisine,” should surely tickle your fancy.
