Andy Richards, head coach of the womenís soccer team, has said that his team tends to play better on the road. This past weekend, the Falcons proved their mentor right, as the Falcons won two games on the road, beating Akron and Kent State.
On Friday, BG defeated Akron 2-1 on goals by Julie Trundle and Jill Conover. The victory evened the Falconsí MAC record at 2-2.
Richards didnít think the team played its best game on Friday, but did play well enough to win.
ìWe played kind of patchy on Friday,î Richards said. ìWe played well in some parts and not so well in other parts, but we played well enough to beat a much improved Akron team.î
Richards praised the work of Conover, who along with her game-winning goal Friday, was credited with an assist on Trundleís goal. The assist gave Conover the most assists in school history.
ìJill has spent a little bit of time on the bench this year, but has come back with a great attitude,î Richards said. ìShe has worked really hard in the meantime, and she got her reward on Friday.î
Sundayís game saw Britt Anderson score the gameís only goal 15 minutes into the second half. Richards said that BG played a solid game against the Flashes.
ì[Sunday] I thought we played a better game throughout the whole 90 minutes,î Richards said. ìKent gave us a bit of pressure, but we were able to overcome that pressure and prevent them from scoring. Then there was a wonderful goal by Britt Anderson.î
The 1-0 victory improved BGís MAC record to 3-2, and gave the Falcons more conference victories then they had all of last year. ìWe knew that these were to games that we could win,î Richards said. What we must make sure we do now is build on that and go into next weekend and win two more games.î
The Falcons have two home games next weekend against Marshall and Ohio. Richards said that those two games are very important.
ìThis is a big weekend for us,î Richards said. ìWe have to win both of these games.î
Richards said that the team effort has been strong this season. When asked to name individual players who played well this weekend, Richards instead gave credit to the entire roster for the two wins.
ìRather than emphasizing individuals, I think we need to point out what a good team we are becoming,î Richards said. ìWe have kids doing things now who didnít play a couple of weeks ago. We have a lot of people with a lot of talent, and I think the depth of our team is really starting to come out.î
