Coach Curtis Carr decided to go in another direction with his goaltender tonight.
Falcon goalie Cole Moore earned his first start of the year but was unable to prevent an early goal five minutes into the period at the hand of Swedish defenseman Uula Ruikka. The Falcons settled in, winning three faceoffs, and recording 11 shots before a quick turnover resulted in the second Viking goal with ten minutes left in the period.
Freshman forward Hunter Bischoff got the best of Cole Moore as he did in the first period of Saturday’s game against Christian Stoever, this time scoring an unassisted goal to make it 1-0.
The first-period scoring does not stop there. At 8:21 on the clock, junior defenseman Brady Ziemer found the net with assists by forwards Luke Mobley and Ben Troumbly. After some shots and penalties back and forth, the Falcons finished near even with the Vikings in every statistical category. The lone difference maker in the period was the three executed shots by the Vikings.
The Orange and Brown played steadier in the second period, just as they did on Saturday. The Falcons committed just two penalties but were able to kill the time without a goal, an area in which they have been strong so far this season.
After killing the second power play, junior forward Ryan O’Hara, off an assist by Michael Bevilacqua, scored on Viking goalie Zack Rose. This would mark the only goal of the day for the Falcons.
The Falcons tallied 32 shots and 18 shots on goal, holding Augustana to six shots and five on goal including killing two minutes of Augustana power-play.
In the third period, the blue and gold extended their lead to 4-1, with a goal accredited to forward Brett Meerman with an assist by fellow forward Ryan Naumovski.
Goalie Cole Moore did not make a case for his return to the crease, allowing four goals and only saving 26 shots. Even still, BG recorded 70 shots and 44 shots on goal in the game, one of their better performances in that category so far this season.
The team will return home this Friday, October 20 at 7:07 p.m., to take on the Western Michigan Broncos at the Slater Family Ice Arena.
