BGSU Hockey played better this weekend than their 10 total goals allowed showed. Just as well, Cole Moore in his two starts played better than his 10 total goals proved, and both Moore and his team looked identical on both days.
In both Friday and Saturday’s games, BG returned to looking the best they’ve looked offensively this season. Despite being outshot 47-16, the Falcons put up more quality shots than the Broncos.
In both games, Western Michigan’s offense centered around peppering the goalie and forcing them to make plays. At the same time, Bowling Green resorted to taking high-quality shots, landing a superior shot percentage of .125 as opposed to Western Michigan’s .106.
Although Western Michigan won more faceoffs than the Falcons in both games, they possessed about the same amount of puck time, both teams being highly aggressive on steals and passes, resulting in many turnovers and few quality shot opportunities.
Both teams took advantage of mistakes by the other team, Friday with the goal by Josh Nodler on the puck mishandling by goalie Cameron Rowe, and Saturday with the powerplay goal by Spencer Kersten in the first period.
Western Michigan took advantage of a puck mishandling by Breck McKinley on Friday, and an empty net goal on both Friday and Saturday. No one took advantage of more opportunities than Sam Colangelo, scoring a hat trick in the home arena with the sealing empty netter in the 17th minute.
While not evident, in the scores of the two games Cole Moore played two superb games in the crease for the Falcons.
Moore totaled 42 saves in the second game with a .913 save percentage coupled with 30 saves at home on Friday and a .850 save percentage. The freshman also held the talented Western Michigan team to tw0 goals in the first two periods of both games.
Bowling Green hosts Mercyhurst in two weekends f0r another home-home series starting at 7:07 on Friday, November 3.
