Safety of students is very important at Bowling Green State University. Deputy Chief Luidhardt and parking service staff member Aileen Berry explain just a few ways safety and student support is implemented at the university.
Cameras
BGSU has put many cameras into practice. Deputy Chief Luidhardt explains that many thefts in dorms are solved by the university’s cameras. He states “Thefts in dorms the majority of those are solved by the camera system.” By using the camera system, Luidhardt and his agency are able to catch offenders.
Shuttle Services
The Shuttle Service at BGSU is a great way to get around. Whether you’re going downtown or to your dorm the shuttles are in service. Aileen Berry, a desk worker and former shuttle worker, explains “There’s no reason to walk on this campus.” There is even a service for those scared to walk alone. Police will walk with students. Berry further explains, “They will walk with you. Someone shows up with a uniform on.”
Hazing
Although to some hazing is just light-hearted jokes, at BGSU hazing is taken seriously. Deputy Chief Luidhardt of campus police, assures that hazing is not taken lightly at the university. He says, “BGSU takes all reports very seriously,” and he continues, “Anytime something is submitted there is a group of administrators at BGSU that instantly do a review.”
Mental Health
At the university, staff and administration push for what is best for the students. In an interview Deputy Chief Luidhardt explains, “So maybe someone that does have and has developed into a drinking problem. . . so in those cases we’ll allow our officers to have discretion and work closely with the dean of students office.” He further explains how BGSU finds the right solutions for students.
Deputy Chief Luidhardt says, “You’re in a position to make change and you’re in a position to affect change.”
