After performing at Bowling Green State University’s Bloomfest, Cousin Simple returned to the Michael and Sarah Kuhlin Center to close out the Spring semester of Live & Loud.
The indie alt-rock band from Columbus originated through the childhood bonds between frontman Will Hoag, guitarist Ryan Ulibarri, and bassist Mitch Whittaker. “Ryan and I went to school together from first grade and on,” Hoag shared, “and we met Mitch in seventh grade,” marking the beginning of the trio’s musical journey together.
Reflecting on the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, Hoag noted that “the best thing that came out of that for us” was the addition of drummer David Vanlaningham and guitarist Luke Ulibarri to the group, solidifying the band’s lineup.
Cousin Simple finds inspiration in their sound from artists such as Wallows, Bleachers, Two Door Cinema Club, Glass Animals, Phoenix, and Last Dinosaurs. The song, “Primadonna,” featured on their 2024 EP Sugarcoat, quickly became a fan favorite and “stand-out” track, with guitarist Ryan Ulibarri noting, “People seem to like it, and we like it, too.”
This summer, Cousin Simple took their music nationwide with the “Part Time Job” tour, visiting major cities like Chicago, Los Angeles, New York City, Boston, and Nashville. The tour will wrap up with a hometown show in Columbus on October 4th at Ace of Cups.
