BGSU baseball (23-11, 12-6) wrapped up their weekend series on Sunday afternoon in Kalamazoo by falling 9-2 in the rubber match to Western Michigan (10-22, 6-9).
The Falcons have lost nine of their last 10 games against the Broncos and have dropped back-to-back Mid-American Conference (MAC) series.
BG sophomore catcher Garrett Wright got BGSU on the board first, launching a solo home run, his seventh of the year, to left field in the first inning. Wright extended his on-base streak to 21 games.
However, WMU scored a pair in the bottom half of the frame to take a 2-1 lead.
Bowling Green sophomore first baseman TJ Takats drove in freshman outfielder Carter Mottice with a single in the fourth inning to tie the game at two apiece. Mottice has reached base in the first four games of his collegiate career.
But Western Michigan again matched the Falcons, scoring a run in the bottom half of the frame to take a one-run lead.
Things unraveled for BG in the fifth inning, as Western Michigan scored four to take a 7-2 lead. The Broncos added a run in the sixth and eighth innings.
Western Michigan graduate starter Reese Gaber earned the win. The left-hander allowed just two runs on six hits in five innings, striking out four and walking two.
Redshirt senior Joe Shapiro and senior Turner Doran combined to toss four scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
Meanwhile, BGSU redshirt freshman reliever Nate Kress took the loss. After Bowling Green starter Nic Good allowed two three runs in four innings, Kress gave up four runs and allowed three hits and two walks while getting just one out.
Western Michigan sophomore infielder Tanner Mally, junior infielder Connor Ostrander and redshirt senior infielder Brendan Harrity each tallied multiple hits. Ostrander also dove in a team-high three runs, while Harrity drove in a pair.
Next, the Orange and Brown will travel to Indiana to face Purdue Fort Wayne on Tuesday at 3 p.m. Falcon Media Sports Network’s Tyler Kavalecz and Kevin Hutchinson will have the call on WBGU 88.1 FM, beginning at 2:45 p.m.
