The Falcons gave their all against Big East opponent South Florida, but couldn’t finish the victory in a three-overtime thriller Friday night, falling to the Bulls 87-84.
The game was full of surprises from the Falcons. The first half was an offensive struggle and BG only put up 27 points against the Bulls. Senior Jordan Crawford did not score a point during the first half, which was unlike the team points leader. Sophomore Anthony Henderson led the team in points in the first half with 9, which was a new career high.
Though BG did not score a lot of points, the team’s shooting percentage of 45.8 percent was well above their season average of 39.6 percent
The second half brought an offensive explosion from the “dynamic duo” of seniors A’uston Calhoun and Jordan Crawford. They scored 26 of the team’s 34 second half points, 11 and 15 points respectively.
At one point during the second half, the Falcons went on a 20-8 run against the Bulls, but South Florida managed to keep the scored tied at the end of regulation to send the game to overtime.
During the first overtime, the lights in the USF Sun Dome went out, causing a 20-minute delay right before the Bulls were set to shoot a free throw. After the delay, the Falcons made two straight baskets to send the game into a second overtime.
In the end, a long three-point shot from Calhoun did not go in and the Bulls sealed their victory at the end of the three-overtime marathon.
BG had two players with double-digit points against the Bulls. Calhoun had 22 points and Crawford had a new career high of 29 points.
The Falcons drop to 5-6 on the season and will travel to Grand Forks, N.D. to take on the University of North Dakota (2-8) on Dec. 28
