Just in time for graduation gift giving comes the book “You Can Be Anything! From A to Z; An Anti-Inspirational Guide to Adulthood.”
Author Sarah Montague takes the classic kiddie picture book format and gives it a warped adult twist. There is a vast array of characters that fit the profile of many different lifestyles, from Owen the Order Taker to Todd the Trekkie.
An even nicer touch than the hilarious descriptions, which as the title says are in alphabetical order, are the childlike stick figure illustrations that accompany each one. Some of the highlights include “Bill is Born Again,” “Owen is an Order Taker,” and “Rita the Receptionist.?
This is definitely not a book for the politically correct, which is nice to see. This book also presents a mix of the slightly depressing along with the humor. While passing this book around work, some of your co-workers will find people at the office who fit the characterizations. You might even see yourself among this motley crew.
“You Can Be Anything” will also make you smack your forehead and go, “Why didn’t I think of this? It’s a book of stick figures and small descriptions!”
The book says that it is for the “genuinely jaded,” and that sounds about right. This book also makes for a nice small graduation gift. However, be careful who you give it to, it’s not for the overly sensitive.
It is a quick read, if you can call it that. If anything else, it is a nice pick-me-up or good for spreading humor around the office. If you are expecting a long term good read, you might want to go elsewhere.
“You Can Be Anything” will be released by Villard Books on April 23 and costs $9.95. Grade: B
