  • They Both Die at the End – General Review
Summer break is the perfect opportunity to get back into reading. Adam Silvera’s (2017) novel, They Both Die at the End, can serve as a stepping stone into the realm of reading. The pace is fast, action-packed, and develops loveable characters. Also, Silvera switches point of view each chapter where narration mainly focuses on the protagonists, […]
  • My Favorite Book – Freshwater
If there’s one book that I believe everyone should read once in their life, it’s my favorite book – Freshwater by Akwaeke Emezi. From my course, Queer Literature under Dr. Bill Albertini, I discovered Emezi’s Freshwater (2018). Once more, my course, Creative Writing Thesis Workshop under Professor Amorak Huey, was instructed to present our favorite […]

International info day begins

Anyone interested in a career or internship overseas will want to participate in International Careers Information Day today.

The event is part of International Week 2004 and includes an information fair where students can learn about international jobs and internships from corporations, government agencies and nonprofit organizations. The fair is free to the public and is a prime opportunity for networking, according to Celeste Robertson, the assistant director for Career Services, which is sponsoring the Information Day.

“This will help students with their long-term, long-range planning,” Robertson said about today’s event in the Lenhart Grand Ballroom in the Bowen Thompson Student Union. “It will educate students with things they might not have thought about such as getting names and contact information. It’s a world of opportunity.”

Other opportunities today include two guest speakers: Ronald Dodard, former U.S. Ambassador to Guyana and James Callahan, director of recruitment for the U.S. State Department, who will both be presenting in 103 Offenhauer West.

In addition to information on international careers and internships, International Week 2004 also has a series of events that began Monday where anyone interested can experience the cultures from the over 600 international students enrolled at the University.

“International Week is a chance for the international students on campus to really show off their own cultures,” said Allison Greber, president of the World Student Association, the student organization for international students that is sponsoring International Week 2004. “They are constantly learning about American culture and this week gives them a chance to teach American students and other international students about many cool things that make each of their cultures unique.”

Although many of these events were earlier in the week, tomorrow’s activities include International Music Listening Stations where anyone can stop by room 208 in the BTSU from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and listen to popular and traditional music from various countries around the world. Also, a student speaker who studied abroad in Italy will discuss Italian music and art at 7 p.m. in room 318 in the BTSU.

The week will be capped off with the International Dinner on Sunday where international students will share dishes from their native countries with everyone who attends the sold-out event. On Monday, three University students from Bulgaria launched International Week 2004 when they gave a presentation of the history and culture of their homeland and served traditional fresh-baked bread dipped in various Bulgarian dried spices to an audience in Kohl Hall. The three international students took pride in educating the audience on their nation, which they say is relatively unknown on campus.

“Many people don’t even know where Bulgaria is,” said Georgi Georgiev, one of the Bulgarian student speakers. Georgiev, a psychology major, said he appreciates the opportunities International Week provides.

“If someone was interested in other cultures, they have the opportunity to learn about them. They can just speak to a citizen of that country.”
