Buffalo rolls to 84-66 stunner over BGSU on senior day

Coming into yesterday’s contest, BGSU women’s basketball had only lost one time at the Stroh Center.

With the Buffalo Bulls coming into town for senior day, on short rest from playing on Thursday against Eastern Michigan due to weather and losing, as well as not being in the top eight of the MAC standings, most thought the game would be a breeze.

Spoiler alert: Buffalo came to play.

The Bulls used a near 70% shooting performance and dominant rebounding to stun the Falcons and win 84-66.

The first quarter was a mess for Bowling Green, as they gave up an early 8-0 run to the Bulls, with six of those points coming via Re’Shawna Stone, the past week’s MAC player of the week.

In the second quarter, BG started to find some success shooting the ball, shooting 62.5% from the field.

Heading into halftime though, BG trailed 44-29, as the Bulls just continued to bury shot after shot, while the Falcons were 3-13 from downtown, including a stunning 0-9 start in the first quarter.

The second half was even more dominant for the Bulls, as Stone, along with Zakiyah Winfield, Jazmine Young and Emerita Mashaire all continued their hot shooting performances, giving the Bulls at one point a 28 point lead.

Stone led the way in scoring with 20 points.

For BG, they had to endure a little adversity coming into the contest, as sophomore standout Jocelyn Tate was out for the game due to a right ankle injury. However, coaches remain optimistic that her absence is temporary.

Senior Allison Day led the way in scoring for the Falcons, ending the day with 20 points. Nyla Hampton, Jasmine Fearne and Lexi Fleming added eight points apiece.

With a performance very uncharacteristic to the type of season BG has had, head coach Robyn Fralick says the team needs to regroup and find their identity again.

“Really tough night for us,” Fralick said. “That was not what we were for hoping for, especially on senior night. Credit Buffalo; I thought they played really well. For us, that was not a version of our team that can continue. We really need to sharpen up moving forward.”

BG has a chance to bounce back in front of a nationally televised audience on Wednesday, March 1, when Ball State comes to town for a pivotal matchup to decide the top seeds for the MAC tournament.

Wednesday’s game is set for an earlier 5 p.m. tip-off, with ESPNU having the broadcast. Radio stream can be found on WBGU- 88.1 FM starting at 4:45.
