MAC WBB Tournament Day One- #4 Kent State advances to semis with win over #5 NIU

The Kent State Golden Flashes defeated the Northern Illinois Huskies earlier today in the second game of the 2023 MAC WBB Quarterfinals by a final score of 75-68.

Four different Golden Flashes ended the night scoring in double figures, with Katie Shumate leading the way with 20 points along with 12 rebounds for a double-double.

Lindsey Thall and Clare Kelly added 16 points apiece, while Casey Santoro pitched in 12 in the winning effort.

For the Huskies, first team all-MAC recipient A’Jah Davis anchored the offense with 26 points and 12 rebounds. Teammate Jayden Marable added 20 points of her own, but a slow first half that saw the Huskies trail by 13 at halftime proved to be too much to overcome.

In a game that saw these two teams meet this past Saturday in Kent, head coach Todd Starkey loved his team’s grit and resiliency.

“NIU… they are prolific offensively,” Starkey said. “I told our team though in timeouts that we were fine… just stay true to the gameplan and everything will work out, and that’s what did.”

Kent State will take on Toledo in the MAC semifinals Friday at 10 AM.
