Two games this week have featured teams battling for spots in the Mid-American Conference (MAC) football championship game.
Both teams proved they belong in the conversation after dominant wins.
There were also several smaller rivalry games this week.
In a game that seemingly only mattered to Kent State and Akron fans, Akron took the victory 38-17. This win clinched the Zips the “Wagon Wheel” rivalry game bragging rights.
This is Akron’s second conference win of the season, however, they still sit at the bottom of the MAC, the only team below them being Kent State.
The Golden Flashes remain winless this season, and their vision of a win becomes less attainable with each passing game.
Central Michigan ended its five-game losing streak and squashed any remaining hope for Western Michigan to advance to the MAC championship game. The Chippewas won 16-14 on Tuesday night.
Freshman quarterback Jadyn Glasser for CMU threw for a touchdown to senior wide receiver Solomon Davis, setting up a six-yard run by senior running back B.J. Harris to open up the game.
Glasser is a fourth-string quarterback for Central, and this was his second start.
Miami, OH, kept their chances of making it to the championship game alive after a 20-9 win over Northern Illinois.
Redshirt junior kicker Dom Dzioban has been a steady and reliable player for the RedHawks all season.
Dzioban was responsible for ten points against the Huskies. This reliable kicker has put Miami on top throughout the year so far and doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon.
In the Eastern Michigan versus Buffalo game, EMU made their move too late.
The Eagles were unable to put up any points until the third quarter. Despite their 13 points in the third quarter, they couldn’t make up the 17-point deficit the Bulls created in the first half.
Senior quarterback C.J. Ogbonna connected with grad student wide receiver J.J. Jenkins for a game-opening 90-yard touchdown pass.
The Eagles still need one more win to become bowl-eligible. Buffalo now stands second in the MAC, behind the three top teams.
Ohio keeps itself alive after a win against Toledo. The final score was 24-7.
Both teams struggled at different points of the game.
Toledo only scored once in the second quarter.
Ohio had to come back from a scoreless first half. They closed out the game with a statement of 17 points in the final quarter.
Grad student quarterback Parker Navarro ran for two touchdowns, continuing to lead his team.
Bowling Green is the third team that sits at the top of the conference rankings; they will take on Ball State on Saturday.
