On Friday, March 14, the Graduate Student Senate (GSS) passed a resolution to Ohio’s SB1, a bill on higher education that was first introduced to the Ohio Senate in January.
SB1 calls for further rules and restrictions on public higher education systems in Ohio. Specific topics include DEI, the discussion of “controversial” topics, intellectual diversity, faculty’s post-tenure review and retrenchment process, faculty striking, etc.
GSS’s resolution says that passing SB1 could impede faculty and staff’s ability to engage in open intellectual discussions, take away faculty freedom to determine their own course learning environment, and ban DEI, which could result in an environment where minority groups do not feel safe or comfortable on campus.
This resolution marked GSS officially joining USG and the Faculty Senate in passing resolutions opposed to SB1.
