Becoming more in touch with the student body has always been one of the main goals of Undergraduate Student Government and at Monday night’s meeting, USG brainstormed ways to best represent the University.
‘[Our main goal is] bringing USG to students,’ Student Welfare Committee Chair Christopher Schiazza said. He also presented to members his new plan for a kiosk that will be in the Union.
Schiazza said that having the kiosk in the Union makes it convenient for students to approach different members of USG with questions or concerns. Schiazza stressed that displaying the kiosk the Union during peak lunch hours makes the group easier to contact than they currently are.
Students are encouraged to visit their office in 404 Union. Schiazza stressed that not many students know they are able to approach the office. The kiosk was created so USG will be right by the Union whenever anyone would like to speak with a member.
The cost of the kiosk would be a total of $692 and funded by the USG budget that was voted on last month. The budget is completely funded by student fees.
College of Education and Human Development Senator questioned if the group should spend nearly $700 on the kiosk and Arts and Sciences Senator Danielle McConnell suggested that members build their own kiosk.
Schiazza said it’s more appealing to order the kiosk they planned to because it looks professional and is portable. He added that the kiosk is an investment into the future.
Other plans were debated at the meeting, including plans to order hand sanitizer that will feature the USG logo on it to hand out to students at events. The idea stemmed from the previous Saturday when USG featured a table at Preview Days and didn’t have anything to hand out to students.
The idea was tossed back and forth at meetings since the summer and Chief of Staff Emily Ancinec presented finer details. The costs will be a total of $600 for 565 .5oz bottles, breaking down to about $1.06 per bottle, which prompted many different members to share how they thought that was a bit much. There is also a setup fee of $50.
Much more planning and brainstorming is going into the hand sanitizers and the kiosk.
Finally, another step towards bringing USG closer to students is their use of the online social networking sites. USG now can be followed on Twitter at twitter.com/BG_USG and Facebook with their fan page, labeled ‘BGSU Undergraduate Student Government.”
