Wellness Connection at the University partnered with Campus Cursive to hold a love letter writing session Monday. Students could pick up a hand-written letter encouraging body positivity, or could choose to write their own letter to give out, in the Bowen-Thompson Student Union Oct. 16.
“We want students to engage in body positive affirmations, and we want them to celebrate their differences,” senior member Kapri Newton said. The table displayed pre-written cards and had paper and markers for those who wished to write their own. They also offered cookies and granola for those looking for a sweet treat and bananas and apples for those seeking healthy options.
Wellness Connection is a program that seeks to promote healthy lifestyles and educate students on general wellness issues like nutrition, alcohol, sexual health and sexual assault awareness. It offers many interactive programs and sessions throughout the year to get students involved and educated. Speakers at these programs include health professionals and peer educators.
“We do things like free HIV testing, we do presentations on peer education (and) we also offer ‘Condom Sense’ workshops where people learn how to put on condoms and how to buy and purchase condoms,” Newton said.
The group will be hosting its annual Monster Mash at the Student Recreation Center next week and programs for HIV Awareness Week at the end of November.
It will also have similar events to the Love Letter Writing that continue throughout this week. “It’s National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week and National Love Your Body Week,” Brittany Warren, a junior member said, so Wellness Connection will be holding various events throughout the week that correspond to both of those themes. Check out their Twitter page at twitter.com/BGSUWellness for more information on all upcoming events.
Campus Cursive is a volunteer group on campus that seeks to “lift up and empower individuals through tangible acts of love,” according to its OrgSync page. Those tangible acts of love are letters its members give to University students and other members of the greater Bowling Green community. Anyone, including faculty and staff, can join Campus Cursive. The group meets Thursdays at 7 p.m. in BA 1000.
