As I reflected on last week’s post, I stumbled upon a related idea. This was the idea and concept of a good guy. I know what my ideas of a good guy are but I felt that was nowhere near enough for me to create something of substance that could represent our generation. I first reached outward in the form of a Twitter poll. The results were 75 percent of the participants voted that good guys do in fact exist, while a mere 25 percent voted that they do not.
Although I was pleased while the amount of buzz the survey received, I wanted to know more. What does our generation think of this as a concept?
Not to mention creating a poll was rather, rigged in that I controlled the response outcomes, I dug deeper conducting interviews with four women and four men on this concept.
The first interviewee is Isaac Vanhorn, a first year and also friend of mine from Ohio University. The first question was whether or not good guys exist. Vanhorn had this to say;
“ Good guys? yes. Perfect guys? No. But to be fair there are good women out there but not a perfect one.”
Swallowing my fear of talking to complete strangers, especially guys, I dug deeper to complete strangers.
Friends Holly Rodenhausen and Megan Mcintosh were kind enough to participate in this survey. They are local students both nursing majors and both second years. The questions I asked them along with all other female participants are as follows:
-
Is there such a thing as a good guy?
-
Is there an example of a good guy in your life?
-
What do you define as a good guy?
Mcintosh and Rodenhausen both stated that they believe that there is such a thing as a good guy.
Mcintosh examples of good guys are her father and guy friends.
Rodenhausen gave examples of celebrities who exemplify the good guy persona, and they were Ashton Kutcher, for being an activist and Mark Ruffalo because, well he’s Mark Ruffalo.
Mcintosh described a good guy as being a good listener that puts others first. While Rodenhausen described a good guy as respectful and kind.
The questions the guys responded to are as follows:
-
Is there such a thing as a good guy?
-
Do you consider yourself a good guy?
-
What do you define as a good guy?
As much as I would like to include the whole study in this one piece it would be a really long article, so I will be continuing the study in next week’s column.
Please stay tuned even over the break as this series is by no means finished, there are plenty of responses that are not included, that will be featured in future columns. Thank you all of the participants in the survey.
