Updates from the Monday (Aug. 29) meeting:
TEDxBGSU sponsored tickets
The Undergraduate Student Government invited representatives from TEDxBGSU to their meeting tonight. Seniors Skyler Rogers, curator of TEDxBGSU, and Paul Hemminger spoke about the upcoming event, which will take place Sept. 16.
President Mary Ellen Mazey is sponsoring tickets for 100 students to attend the event. Rogers and Hemminger said the primary reason they came to the meeting was to encourage USG members to apply for the sponsored tickets.
“I think it’s really cool,” said Emily Ancinec, USG President. “I know they’ve been working very hard on it. … It says a lot about the people who were working behind it.”
Off-campus senator Melissa Dzienny said she thinks it will be a good opportunity for students.
“It’s something the students could definitely benefit from,” Dzienny said.
USG to receive training for ALICE program
A program called Alert Lockdown Inform Countdown Evacuate or ALICE was also discussed at the meeting. Michael Ginsburg, USG Advisor, said the program deals with “active shooter training” and what to do.
“It’s about thinking things through and not being a target [when there is the threat of a shooter],” Ginsburg said.
Monica Moll, university police chief, and the police department are working with USG to train members in ALICE, the department will do the training at a USG meeting in October.
Ginsburg said the resident advisers received the training and that the goal was to train as many areas of campus as possible.
Improvements to Wireless Internet
Off-campus senator Melissa Dzienny gave a presentation about wireless Internet on campus and how USG is working with the University to get better wireless for students on campus.
“Last year when I was the committee chair I made a decision to do surveys [about wireless access on campus],” Dzienny said.
There were 200 people surveyed, and the locations where Internet could be improved was narrowed to specific locations.
“Our goal is to get [wireless Internet] as strong as possible,” Dzienny said.
Dzienny has plans to meet with University InterChief Information Officer, John Ellinger, to talk more about improving the wireless connection for students.
TARTA
There was also an update about TARTA at Monday’s meeting.
USG members met with the student group for TARTA at their executive meeting, and Ancinec reported about USG’s intent to organize a joint meeting between TARTA, the student TARTA group and University administrators.
Mazey to host reception at residence:
President Mazey will host a Student Leaders Reception at her University house on Sept. 18 at 2-4 p.m. All the USG members are invited.
“I think it’s a great way to connect personally with her,” Ancinec said.
The reception is a way for Mazey to get acquainted with USG members and other student leaders personally.
