If you live in Ohio and are looking to save some money on back-to-school supplies, mark your calendars for August 4 to August 6.
That marks the state’s Sales Tax Holiday, established by the Ohio legislature in 2019 to shoppers the chance to save on back-to-school items and other qualifying purchases.
During the Sales Tax Holiday, shoppers will be exempt from paying sales tax on specific items, including clothing priced at $75 or less, school supplies costing $20 or less, and instructional materials priced at $20 or less. The aim of this temporary tax relief is to assist families and individuals in their preparations for the upcoming school year, while also providing a boost to local businesses.
To help shoppers plan their purchases, the Ohio Department of Taxation has provided a comprehensive list of eligible items on its website and the answer to a number of common questions such as “What type of items qualify as school supplies?” and “What items of clothing qualify?” It also explains layaway items are only eligible if they are placed on layaway during the Sales Tax Holiday period.
