Mid-American Conference (MAC) teams were all or nothing this week. Many teams went scoreless one quarter, then dominated the next. The big theme for the week seemed to be high-scoring quarters holding their opponents to zero.
Northern Illinois has fallen far from their beginning of the season play. From being ranked in week two of gameplay to not being able to score a touchdown, the Huskies struggled and ultimately lost to Toledo 13-6 on Saturday.
Senior kicked Kannon Woodill was the only player to score for NIU. Woodill hit a 36- and 37-yard field goal in the first and second quarter, respectively.
On Toledo’s side, they once again went scoreless in the first quarter. The Rockets were able to find momentum, but only enough for one touchdown.
Freshman punter Dylan Cunanan kicked for two good field goals to solidify the Rocket’s win.
Another team to go scoreless in the first quarter was Ohio. The Bobcats went the entire first half without putting any points on the board.
Miami sixth-year quarterback Brett Gabbert was able to throw for two touchdowns in the second quarter to give the RedHawks the lead. He was able to keep the momentum rolling, throwing for a third in the third quarter.
Despite their slow start, the Bobcats put up 14 unanswered points in the final quarter, attempting to make up for their 16-0 deficit going into the half. Their efforts came too late, with the RedHawks winning 30-20.
Central Michigan was another team to not be able to put up any points in the first quarter.
Also, like the Bobcats, CMU put up 13 unanswered points in a quarter. The second and third quarters were the shining moments for the Chips.
Redshirt senior placekicker Tristan Mattson kicked two impressive 51- and 56-yard field goals in the third quarter alone.
Despite these efforts, Eastern Michigan had an even more impressive game. The Eagles made up for their scoreless third quarter by scoring 22 points in the final quarter.
Senior quarterback Cole Snyder threw for two and ran for a third touchdown in the fourth quarter, also completing a two-point conversion to give his team the 38-34 win.
Western Michigan and Buffalo had an extremely high-scoring game on Saturday.
Buffalo’s redshirt sophomore kicker Upton Bellanfant put his team within seven with a minute left in the game. Unfortunately, the Bulls could not finish the game.
Western Michigan’s redshirt senior quarterback Hayden Wolff threw for three touchdowns, contributing to WMU’s high-scoring win of 48-41.
Jaden Nixon finalized his team’s win by running 54 yards with 2:43 left to go in the game.
Bowling Green defeated Kent State 27-6 at home on Saturday.
Ball State lost to Southeastern Conference member Vanderbilt 24-14 on Saturday.
