One team fell from the top this week in Mid-American Conference (MAC) football.
Now Bowling Green, Miami, OH, and Ohio sit tied at the top with 5-1 conference records.
All three of these teams won big in their mid-week Maction games.
Western Michigan lost rather big to Bowling Green on Tuesday night. The Broncos were defeated 31-13.
Another team losing big was Central Michigan. The Chippewas traveled to take on Toledo, where they ultimately fell 37-10 to the Rockets.
Junior Toledo quarterback Tucker Gleason was a driving force to the dramatic Toledo win. Gleason threw for three touchdowns to help give his team momentum.
The Rocket’s defense also had a strong presence, with five takeaways, one of which was a 45-yard interception that junior defensive back Nasir Bowers returned for a touchdown.
This win moves the Rockets to a 4-2 conference record.
The third Maction game played Tuesday night went into overtime.
With an exciting, high-scoring game, Buffalo topped Ball State 51-48.
Senior quarterback for Buffalo C.J. Ogbonna was on a roll.
Ogbonna accounted for five scores on Tuesday night.
Redshirt freshman quarterback for Ball State Kadin Semonza topped Ogbonna’s yards with 327 to Ogbonna’s 264. However, his team was unable to back him up.
The only quarter the Bulls outscored the Cardinals was the fourth, but when it came to overtime, Buffalo relied on Ogbonna, who pulled through for his team.
Wednesday night, two of the top three teams proved themselves by both holding their opponents to a single touchdown.
Ohio beat Eastern Michigan 35-10.
While no teams scored in the first quarter, and it was EMU to put up the first points, grad student quarterback Parker Navarro came through for OU. Navarro ran for four of his team’s five touchdowns.
The Ohio team led by Navarro only seems to be getting stronger.
Meanwhile, Miami, who also sits at the top of the MAC with only one loss, held Kent State to one touchdown the entire game.
Similarly to Ohio and EMU, it was Kent State who scored the first points. Then, after about five minutes of gameplay, the RedHawks came back fighting.
Redshirt junior kicker Dom Dzioban has come through for his team all season, and this game was no exception. Dzioban kicked four extra points and two field goals from 45 and 25 yards out.
Despite the slower starts, both these teams proved they deserved their spots at the top of the MAC.
Akron and Northern Illinois faced off as well on Wednesday night. NIU came out on top, winning 29-16.
While neither team has a chance at making it to the MAC championship, it should be noted that NIU is the only MAC team to be ranked in the top 25 this season.
After beating fifth-ranked Notre Dame early in the season, the Huskies seemed to fall off. They have been gaining momentum, and this game was promising for them.
As far as MAC championship standings go, BG beating Western Michigan cleared a few things up. However, the standings are in no way set yet.
The Broncos now have a much smaller chance of making it to the championship game despite being the only team undefeated just two weeks ago.
Bowling Green and Miami will face off in two weeks, if both remain with only one loss until then, this game will be the make-or-break as far as who will go to the MAC tournament.
Ohio and Miami already faced off, with Miami coming out on top. The Bobcats will not play the Falcons in regular season play.
