On a chilly afternoon in April, BGSU sotball (13-25, 5-9) faced off against the Western Michigan Broncos (11-26, 5-7). BG ultimately fell short, in a very defensive battle between them and WMU.
The Broncos were up to bat first, and the Falcons went three of three. Just like that, BG was up to bat at the bottom of the first. Up to hit first was Bowling Green’s first base, Taylor Behrendt. After four balls, Behrendt walked to first base.
Two more walks later, the bases were loaded and Bowling Green’s catcher, Ava McKee, was at bat. She hit a single, allowing Behrendt to score, putting the Orange and Brown on the board 1-0. The Falcons next hitter struck out, ending the inning.
Western Michigan wasn’t on the field too long at the start of the second, having two hits with no runs. The Falcons maintained their 1-0 advantage as they took the field at the bottom of the second. BG wasn’t on the field much longer, ending the second inning with no score change.
Caitlin Tighe for the Broncos hit a single to start the third inning. After three consecutive outs, BGSU took the field with their 1-0 lead. They couldn’t generate much, ending the inning without any hits or runs.
An impressive double at the top of the fourth by WMU gave them players on both second and third base. An extremely crucial out by McKee prevented Western Michigan from scoring. Because of that, Bowling Green’s outfielders were in a position to make a play, and they did, getting the Broncos off the field.
After four innings, the score was still 1-0 in favor of BG.
At the top of the fifth, WMU hit three singles, loading the bases and putting them in a position to score. Despite this, the Broncos were unable to capitalize and the first half of the inning ended.
BGSU’s first hit of the game came from Behrendt at the bottom of the fifth. After a flyout, the fifth inning came to an end.
Western Michigan started the sixth with an error by Jordan Smith and a single by Payton Kelly. Bases one and two were now occupied by the Broncos. Another walk by Western Michigan had the bases loaded again. Micaela Booth hit a single, allowing two Broncos to score, making the score 2-1 in favor of WMU.
BG struck back with an immediate single by Hannah Hunt. After another single, McKee was up to bat.
The seventh inning started, with the Broncos holding their 2-1 lead. Tristen Head hit a double to start Western Michigan’s batters. Two walks had the bases loaded again for WMU. A third walk let Head score, pushing the lead to 3-1.
The Falcons were unable to come back and score, falling short to Western Michigan with a final score of 3-1. Both teams will face off in a doubleheader tomorrow, starting at 1:00 p.m.
