Paige Berger highlighted the BG softball doubleheader sweep of Detroit on Tuesday by breaking the BG career home run record.
“My time here at BG has just been great, I couldn’t picture myself anywhere else,” Berger said. “ From day one I had the support from my teammates and my coaches, and to go through year-by-year I knew I was getting up there but to finally get it, it’s awesome.”
Berger has now hit 34 home runs in her four year career, including three Tuesday.
The Falcons dropped the Titans 12-3 in game one and 9-1 in game two. The wins move the Falcons to a three-game win streak despite having a rough in-conference weekend.
The wins at Detroit will not help the Falcons recover any lost ground in the Mid-American Conference, but contribute to their 16-11 overall record.
In game one, Hannah Fulk came out swinging for the Falcons driving a home run. Not to be out done, Berger and Adrienne Dick followed Fulk’s cue and also hit a home run each – all back to back to back.
BG again earned three more runs in the third inning with more Berger and Dick home runs. Berger’s was a single shot to left field and Dick’s was a two-run drive out of center field.
Detroit managed to score a run in the fifth, sixth and the seventh but the Falcon offense was too much.
Scoring runs for the Falcons were Berger with four, Fulk with three, Katie Yoho with two, Dick with two and Chole Giordano with one. Pitcher Jamie Kertes picked up the win while Paris Imholz gathered the save.
In game two, Imholz pitched the complete game allowing six hits and a home run. Imholz also struck out four Titans at the plate.
The Falcons opened up scoring right away with Dick doubling to center field which brought home Fulk for the first run of the game.
Berger hit her career mark in the top of the second inning. The left-field shot brought home Emily McClelland and Giordano for three runs.
The Titans didn’t score until the sixth inning of a Kayla Kostich single shot home run. Kostich provided Detroit’s only offense having gone 1-for-4.
The Falcons scored in six of seven innings throughout the game which Detroit was unable to match.
“I think this really shows that when we play as a team, we can go all the way,” Berger said.
Also adding scores throughout the game for the Falcons were Katie Yoho, Marissa Shook, Erika Stratton and Giordano and McClelland with two. Imholz gathered the win to move to a 10-4 record on the year.
The Falcons will be back in MAC action with a home doubleheader against Akron followed by a home weekend series with Ohio.
