  • Petrofiction Review: Oil on Water
Here’s my review of Oil on Water by Helon Habila – a petrofiction novel which won The Commonwealth Prize and Caine Prize. For context, petrofiction stems from petroleum and fiction. A specific text that focuses on petroleum culture in political economics and environmental impact. Although Habila’s novel begins with a journalist investigating a kidnapping, the […]

Action scenes engaging in ‘Riddick,’ sometimes overdone

Grade: B

Vin Diesel makes me wonder how all Furions ever died in his new movie “Riddick.”

He plays a character named Riddick, and this is the third movie in the series. From being an outlaw and loner, the last of his kind to survive, to king of the Necromongers, the strongest empire in the galaxy, Riddick went through it all in the last two movies [Not to mention he somehow manages to look hot through all his trials … and this movie doesn’t disappoint either].

In this movie, Riddick is tricked by his followers and left stranded on a planet that is all too familiar. It is the same one he made is appearance in “Pitch Black.”

Knowing he has to get off the planet before the dark comes and creatures of the night come to devour him, he sends out a distress call that lets all bounty hunters know where he is, and they are more than willing to come for the price on his head.

The action is never stopping and Riddick’s survival skills never cease to amaze.

Even though Riddick has been incredibly strong in past movies, they were realistic. However, in this movie, Riddick had almost super abilities like being able to kick a sword in mid-air and cut a guy’s head in half. I don’t know about you but that doesn’t seem like something that could actually happen … a little over done I guess.

In all, there was the familiar gorey action and scenes that would make you want to laugh and cry. Oh, and did I mention that Riddick is naked in one scene? So basically the movie covers it all. I would recommend seeing it, however I don’t think the movie was as good as “The Chronicles of Riddick.” It is still a great piece to add to the collection, and if you are a Riddick fan, like myself, the money won’t be wasted.
