The Bowling Green swim and dive team closed out its regular season Friday with a win against Youngstown State.
The Falcons won 177-122, finishing the season at 9-1.
“They were fighting hard and that’s what we were kind of looking for,” head coach Petra Martin said. “A lot of them did a good job in the different situations we put them in.”
The team won nine out of 16 events, while six swimmers grabbed individual victories.
Franziska Wohlert and Daniela Carrillo took two first place finishes. Wohlert finished first in the 100 and 200 backstrokes. Carrillo won the 100 and 200 breaststrokes.
There were a few Falcons who raced in different events, including Victoria Griffin and Estela Davis. For the first time this season, Griffin swam the 200 individual medley where she placed first.
Davis won the 100 butterfly, which was her first time swimming in that event on the season, as well.
“I think it’s good for them mentally, too, just knowing that they don’t have to be just swimming their main events to do well,” Martin said. “I think it’s good for their confidence and adding a little more fun to what we have been doing.”
Kayla Effinger and Jordan Bullock also secured wins for the Falcons.
Bowling Green now looks towards MAC Championships taking place in less than three weeks.
“I think we have had a great year so far and we’re all really excited for championships,” Martin said. “I’m really proud of them. They’ve been doing a great job this whole year and it’s been a fun year and we can’t wait for MACs.”
The Falcons competed in two back-to-back meets to close out the season, and Martin thinks the traveling will have the team in the right mindset for MACs.
“It was good to have another travel meet before the [MAC] championships,” Martin said. “It kind of took them out of their comfort zone and they were able to deal with different things.”
Finishing 4-1 in conference meets, only losing to rival Buffalo, Martin thinks the success has given the team confidence to go into championship racing.
“I know that our team they really want to do something special at the end,” Martin said. “I don’t think the first time, but they just really want it. They have a strong desire to do really well.”
The Falcons head to Eastern Michigan Feb. 25-28 for the four day championship.
