What is Booktok?

Booktok was a hashtag first created on Tiktok in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. Users initially created the trend in order to share recommendations, their current reads and to encourage others to try out new books and series. Using social media, this became an asset for authors to share their publications and gain traction.

The Benefit

Booktok has benefitted the publication industry in more ways than one. According to Publishers Weekly, there was a significant increase in sales in young adult fiction in stores and online. However, an increase in sales is not the only benefit. By creating a space for authors and publishers to share their recommendations and new books, it encouraged readers and the audience to sell out multiple books.

The Future

As Booktok only continues to grow by the day, this will be a huge opportunity for marketing brands in the future. The potential for the industry will only continue to encourage readers and young adults on the platform to continue to purchase books, support local businesses and encourage the audience to read.
