Buckeye Girls State took over BG campus this past week, celebrating the American Legion Auxiliary of Ohio’s milestone 80th session. From June 8 to 14, more than 600 high school students and staff members got a residential experience on campus to learn about city, county and state government.
The week-long celebration included visits from Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine, Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose and the Buckeye Girls State general election results. In the election, seven members of Buckeye Girls State were elected for various governing roles within the group including Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Secretary of State, Treasurer of State, Auditor of State and Chief Justice.
Buckeye Girls State follows a nonpartisan approach to educate rising high school seniors on the rights and obligations of good citizenship. Delegates of the group across Ohio recognized and voted in leaders for a simulated role in government across city, county and state. Participants would than get the opportunity to attend government workshops and take part in legislative sessions.
This is the third year in a row BGSU has hosted the conference, welcoming the group in 2023. Prior to the 2023 outing, Buckeye Girls State was last hosted at Bowling Green in 1997.
“As a public university for the public good, Bowling Green is committed to empowering the next generation of learners to be engaged in our democracy.” BGSU President Rodney K. Rogers said. “We are grateful to the American Legion Auxiliary of Ohio for their continued trust in BGSU, a place that promotes lifelong learning and civic engagement, traits that lead to great careers and great lives.”
