The famous delivery robots around campus have reached their final destinations. Starship Technologies, the provider of the robots announced on June 4 that they are ending their services at all universities across the nation.
The company will instead focus on grocery and hot food delivery in European and American cities. Starship robots have been a part of Bowling Green campus since 2020, ending a six-year run. Bowling Green was the first university in Ohio to offer autonomous delivery, a response to COVID-19 and quarantine efforts.
According to a university statement, BGSU Dining is currently in the final stages of a new agreement with another vendor to continue robot delivery on campus, with expanded options for the university community. While details have not been released, the new service is expected to be operational by the beginning of fall semester 2026.
Starship Technologies have been the delivery network for over 60 campuses across America since 2018. Starship CEO Ahti Heinla said the opportunity to move into grocery delivery provided enough promise to wind down university services.
“Campus and grocery are fundamentally different operations: One is seasonal and contract-driven, the other is a 365-day urban business requiring different infrastructure, different retail partnerships and a different go-to-market approach,” Heinla said in a written report to Food on Demand.
