  • My Favorite Book – Freshwater
If there’s one book that I believe everyone should read once in their life, it’s my favorite book – Freshwater by Akwaeke Emezi. From my course, Queer Literature under Dr. Bill Albertini, I discovered Emezi’s Freshwater (2018). Once more, my course, Creative Writing Thesis Workshop under Professor Amorak Huey, was instructed to present our favorite […]

Minnesota State at Michigan Tech, MTU 4-3

With another outstanding performance by the Huskies on their home ice, the four-seed advanced to the Mason Cup finals.

Minnesota State played more consistently than Michigan Tech, scoring a goal in all three periods. The Huskies’ X-factor was third-period scoring and some element of fortune toward the black and gold.

Tied 3-3, the teams looked like they were heading into an exciting overtime game. With 9.1 seconds left, Logan Pietila threw a shot off the high glass behind the Maverick goal. The puck flipped over the crossbar, onto the head of goaltender Alex Tracy, and into the net leaving Tracy doubled over in dismay.

The entirety of Michigan Tech was stunned, including Pietila who was accredited with the goal. Minnesota State felt like the “hockey gods” were against them as they were unable to fill the net in the remaining seconds.

The loss means that for the first time since CCHA reintroduction, Minnesota State will not have a chance at winning the Mason Cup, a feat they have accomplished two straight years.

Michigan Tech will now head to Bemidji for their first away playoff game this season.

Lake Superior State at Bemidji State, BSU 4-1

Bemidji State completed a dominating win over the Lakers.

BSU peppered senior Ethan Langenegger in the Laker crease, totaling 61 shots and 38 shots on goal. Of the 38, four went into the net with the fourth goal coming from Eric Pohlkamp who extended his goal streak to three games.

CCHA Goaltender of the Year winner Mattias Sholl had an easy day in the net. The Beaver netminder allowed only one goal in 14 shots on goal, earning his third playoff win and 14th overall. Sholl extended his win streak to eight games, allowing only 14 goals through those eight.

Bemidji State remains at home for the Mason Cup championship series against Michigan Tech. The Beavers are 15-6 at home this year with a split against the Huskies and three playoff wins.

The Sanford Center in Bemidji will host Michigan Tech on Friday, March 22. The winner will take home the Mason Cup trophy.
