Hockey team ties with Bemidji Saturday, loses Friday
After losing 5-2 on Friday night against Bemidji State on the road, the sixth-ranked BG hockey team responded with a 2-2 tie on Saturday night. The Falcons now have a 15-6-5 overall record and are 11-4-3 in conference play.
In Friday’s matchup, BG defenseman Nolan Valleau scored his first two goals of his collegiate career. Brandon Hawkins recorded an assist on Valleau’s first collegiate goal, and Mark Friedman and Dan DeSalvo tallied assists on his second goal of the game.
The Beavers outshot the Falcons 29-20 on the night and were 1-for-3 on the power play with a power play goal in the third period. BG was 0-for-3 on the power play.
In Saturday’s game, Kevin Dufour scored his 12th goal of the season to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead in the first period. Brandon Hawkins and Dan DeSalvo recorded assists on the goal.
Then in the second period at the 15:06 mark, Pierre Luc Mercier added to the Falcons lead with a goal. Adam Berkle and Brent Tate had assists on the play.
Bemidji State scored a goal at the 16:55 mark in the third period, and added a goal with 55 seconds left in regulation to tie the game 2-2. Neither team could score in the five minute overtime period, and the game ended in a tie.
BG goalie Chris Nell made 26 saves on the night. Both teams finished 0-for-4 on the power play.
BG will be back home at the BGSU Ice Arena this weekend to face conference opponent Ferris State.
