It is never easy to win games on the road. But for the BGSU men’s soccer team, they were able to keep their winning streak alive.
The No. 17-ranked Falcons defeated the Canisius Golden Griffins in Buffalo, New York 2-1, to extend their winning streak to four straight wins.
The Falcons (7-1-1), were able to jump out to a 2-0 lead in the first half. The goals came from sophomores Joey Akpunonu and Kyle Cusimano, with both assists coming from freshman Alberto Anaya.
In the second half, the Golden Griffins were pesky to put away. After attempting just three shots — and putting none of them on goal — in the first half, the Griffins outshot the Falcons by a 13-3 count in the second half.
With 31 minutes left in the second half, Canisuis’ Noah Hodson put a ball in the top left corner to cut the deficit to 2-1 for the Griffins. However, tough defense and great goalkeeping from Logan Kowalczyk were enough to win it for the Falcons.
Even though the game was not perfect, Head Coach Eric Nichols was pleased with his team’s grittiness and toughness.
“The performance wasn’t how we drew it up,” Nichols said. “But I am proud of the resilience we displayed to hold on and get a win on the road.”
The Falcons are now 4-0-0 on the road this season. The last time they were undefeated this far into the season on the road, it was the 1997 team; that team went on to win the MAC title.
The Falcons will be on the road again on Sept. 29, against the Ohio State Buckeyes in Columbus. Afterward, they will come home to begin their MAC Conference schedule.
