As July Fourth approaches, Bowling Green city officials are reminding residents that fireworks remain illegal within city limits, despite a state law passed in 2022 that permits consumer-grade fireworks.
The state law allows fireworks to be discharged on July 3, 4 and 5. However, the City of Bowling Green has its own ordinance prohibiting firework discharge, which remains in effect and is enforceable.
City officials said the local law takes precedence over state law.
BGPD Deputy Chief Adam Skaff said the police department understands the desire to celebrate Independence Day with fireworks; however, he emphasized it’s still prohibited.
“Individuals who violate this ordinance could be cited for the violation, which is a minor misdemeanor,” said Skaff. “We encourage people to celebrate and enjoy the various festivities put on by the city, but to do so without the use of fireworks.”
Bowling Green Fire Chief Bill Moorman said to leave the fireworks displays to professional pyrotechnicians.
City Ordinance 93.40 can be read here.
BG Boom, the city’s official fireworks display, is July 3 at the Wood County Fairgrounds.
