The Best Downtown Placemaking Award honors people and places committed to the development of public spaces and the health of their community through preservation and revitalization and the city of Bowling Green (BG) is a finalist.
The winner of the award will be announced 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15 at the Heritage Ohio Annual Conference in downtown Canton, free to the public.
Bowling Green became a finalist for the award after receiving a federal grant to place historical signs around downtown. The federal grant was made possible when BG joined the Certified Local Government program, an initiative that establishes relationships between local and state governments.
According to Hallie Williams, Executive Director of Downtown Bowling Green, collaboration with the Historic Preservation Commission, an organization dedicated to preserving the history and maintaining historic buildings in Bowling Green, paved the way for the Historic Signage Project.
These signs preserve the history of several Bowling Green landmarks such as the Wood County Courthouse, Wood County District Public Library, the old post office and police building.
“This collaboration shows how thoughtful, strategic efforts can directly enhance our Downtown and benefit the entire community. These signs celebrate our history while creating a stronger sense of place for everyone who lives, works, and visits here,” Williams said in a statement.
